With eco-friendly cars on the up-and-up, it was only a matter of time before an automaker would tackle a new challenge: a larger hybrid vehicle well equipped to handle a crowd. Leave it to the masterminds at Chrysler, who more or less invented the minivan with the Town & Country, to reinvent it to fit the modern ideal.
At this year’s Chicago Auto Show, Chrysler brand – FCA North America president and CEO, Al Gardner, confirmed that the automaker is working on the first plug-in hybrid minivan. The new type of vehicle will bear a striking resemblance to an old favorite when it pulls into dealerships, though. Chrysler is reworking the Town & Country to include an environmentally friendly powertrain for the 2016 model year, with the highlight, of course, being a plug.
While details about Chrysler’s plug-in hybrid minivan are still sparse, we do know that it will present a new opportunity to green-car enthusiasts with growing families. FCA confirmed that the Town & Country PHEV will get 75 MPGe. In the same announcement, Chrysler revealed that it’s also working on a full-size plug-in hybrid crossover for environmentally friendly families, with an expected release date in 2017.
The news of a plug-in hybrid minivan follows Fiat Chrysler Automobile Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne’s announcement that he hopes to unveil a new minivan at the next North American International Auto Show in January of 2016.
